Living History Days at N-YHS
Living History @ Home: Let's Bake Jumbles!

Join us online for a very special baking class! Each week, New-York Historical presents a new Recipe of the Week from the Patricia D. Klingenstein Library’s historic cookbook collection. One of these new, very old recipes is for jumbles, a spiced cookie that has graced American tables since the colonial era. Get baking with Living History coordinator Cheyney McKnight on Zoom as she digs into the history about who made them, served them, and ate them during the 19th century. Afterwards, bake the tasty treats yourself using our kid-friendly instructions and modern-day recipe tips.

Ingredients
1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
2/3 cups sugar
5 tbsp unsalted butter
1-2 tsp caraway seeds, ground (substitution: anise or fennel seeds, ground) 
2 eggs
1 tbsp rosewater (substitution: 1 tsp vanilla extract)
1 tsp ground cinnamon or nutmeg (optional)
Zest of 1 lemon (optional)
