Harlem by Camilo José Vergara

Harlem, an exhibition of 94 photographs taken by MacArthur Fellow Camilo José Vergara, records the changes that New York City’s neighborhood sustained in the last decades of the 20thcentury and the first decade of the 21st century. Revealing a significant American story, the photographs serve as witness to the changes that have occurred in one of the nation’s most vibrant and famous neighborhoods. Otherwise known as the capital of black America, Harlem is home to many influential leaders of the civil rights movement and to generations of authors, musicians, visual artists, and actors. The neighborhood is defined by its evolving population and by its buildings, which have an organic quality of their own. This tour marks the first time these photographs will travel for exhibition.
