Stonewall 50 Time Capsule

May 7–July 4, 2021

In 2019, New-York Historical partnered with the Generations Project on a time capsule to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising in 1969. Hundreds of people contributed photographs and written memories documenting LGBTQ life in New York City and beyond.

After a year's delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the capsule will be sealed in a small ceremony on June 30. After July 4, it will be secured in storage to be reopened in 2069 for the 100th anniversary of Stonewall.

The time capsule container was created by Carlos Lopez.

Stonewall 50 at New-York Historical Society is proudly sponsored by Bank of America. Programming for this exhibition was funded in part by a Humanities New York Action Grant with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Additional support provided by Judy Zankel.

Exhibitions at New-York Historical are made possible by Dr. Agnes Hsu-Tang and Oscar Tang, the Saunders Trust for American History, the Evelyn & Seymour Neuman Fund, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
