JOB TITLE:  Manager of Family Programs
DEPARTMENT:  DiMenna Children’s History Museum (DCHM)
REPORTS TO:  Director of DiMenna Children’s History Museum                

New-York Historical Society, a preeminent educational and research institution, is home to both New York City’s oldest museum and to one of the nation’s most distinguished independent research libraries. N-YHS is dedicated to presenting exhibitions and public programs, and fostering research that reveal the dynamism of history and its influence on the world of today. The DiMenna Children’s History Museum opened in 2011 and offers family visitors a permanent exhibition (aimed at 7-14 year olds) and a broad range of New York and American history themed intergenerational family programs (for children as young as 18 months up through 14 year olds).

JOB SUMMARY:  
The Manager of Family Programs develops and leads history-themed family programs, creates blog content, and oversees Living History work, a full time staff person, and part time staff and college interns. This is a full time position with occasional weekend and holiday work.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for interpreting the past for kids 6 – 12 and their families; interest in collaborate program development; a broad understanding of American history with the ability to go deep through thorough research using primary and secondary sources and our Research Library; and excellent communication and interpretative writing skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for DCHM’s research process and American history content in programs and exhibitions;
  • Develop and oversee all aspects of Reading into History (family book club for middle readers), Camp History (week long sessions of camp for middle school), history holiday programming (Presidents Day, July 4, Veterans Day, etc) and other deep-dive and special family programs for children ages 6 - 12;
  • Develop and oversee all aspects of Living History programming, including one direct-report full time staff;
  • Maintain History Detectives blog, including writing approximately 12 history posts annually;
  • Work on a team to interpret exhibitions for families, including DCHM edits and additions and N-YHS special exhibitions;
  • Manage event budgets adhering to revenue/expense goals.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • BA in history, education, or related field required; MA preferred;
  • Four plus years’ experience working with children ages 14 and younger in an informal learning environment;
  • Demonstrated interest in American history, and track record of creatively interpreting American history for children;
  • Experience serving New York families and working with the public;
  • Ability to work occasional school vacation weeks, weekends, and holidays;
  • Bilingual in Spanish a plus.

This position will require the employee to sit, stoop, walk, speak, and/or stand for up to 7 hours in a day.
