Walk His Way—The Stuart Weitzman Archive Is on View at the New-York Historical Society

Fan of the red carpet shoe cam? You can thank shoe designer Stuart Weitzman for that. Lore has it that the showstopping “million-dollar sandals” he designed for Laura Harring to wear to the 2002 Academy Awards gave birth to the foot-focused camera. These sparklers—remade using Swarovski crystals—are but one of the more than 100 pairs on view at the New-York Historical Society’s exhibition Walk This Way. Most of the footwear displayed comes from the designer’s vast collection, started by his wife, Jane Gershon Weitzman. (In addition to searching out vintage pieces, she’s also commissioned artists to create “fantasy” shoes from unusual materials.)
